{"id":5172,"date":"2013-12-26T09:00:44","date_gmt":"2013-12-26T09:00:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cerebyte.com\/?p=5172"},"modified":"2013-12-26T09:00:44","modified_gmt":"2013-12-26T09:00:44","slug":"ignorance-arrogance-failure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cerebyte.com\/2013\/12\/26\/ignorance-arrogance-failure\/","title":{"rendered":"Ignorance + arrogance = failure"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t<![CDATA[One of our ongoing observations of corporate leadership is that many leaders are both ignorant of the real conditions of the organization and\/or the opportunities for improvement within the organization, and they're very arrogant in that they think they know what's \u00a0going on.\n\nWe're in the midst of several programs involving companies entering, or trying to enter, new markets.\n\nOne is a healthcare company trying something in long-term care that has never been done before. The leadership of this company talks constantly about trying new things, accepting the need for ongoing learning, and staying flexible. As far as we can tell, the company\u2019s actions actually support their sentiments.\n\nThis company has the advantage of being new and not having to overcome ongoing, entrenched attitudes. They are making real progress in the new market.\n\nIn two other situations, however, older companies with established product lines are facing declining market share in their current markets. Meanwhile newer, related markets are growing rapidly.\n\nIn these companies, the leadership talks constantly about how everyone needs to change, but consistently rejects any significant change initiatives. Their rationale, sometimes stated explicitly, is: \u201cWe have been successful for 30 years and we know how to manage this situation.\u201d\n\nThe evidence as seen in their decline and inability to adapt to the new markets is overwhelming: They must truly do something different to survive. Still, they remain ignorant and arrogant. They genuinely believe that they understand the real situation and are doing the right things.\n\nTo any outside observer (and in both cases, to the stock market), these companies are delusional. They are ignorant of the real situation that is literally killing them and too arrogant to understand that they are dying.\n\nIgnorance and arrogance kill a lot of organizations.
